Headaches can range from mild and irritating to severe and debilitating. They may develop gradually or strike suddenly, but no matter their intensity, most people seek relief as quickly as possible. At Edmonds Spine & Sports Medicine, we help patients manage various types of headaches with personalized, non-invasive chiropractic care.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Their typical characteristics include:

  • A pressing or tightening sensation around the head

  • Bilateral (both sides) pain

  • Mild to moderate intensity

  • Duration from 30 minutes to one week

Tension headaches may cause light or sound sensitivity but rarely include nausea or vomiting. They are not linked to other medical conditions and often stem from muscle tension, poor posture, or stress.

Migraine Headaches

Migraines are less common but more severe than tension headaches. They are often mistaken for other headache types, but migraines have distinct symptoms:

  • Moderate to severe, pulsating pain, often on one side of the head

  • Duration of up to 72 hours

  • Nausea and/or sensitivity to light and sound

  • Worsening with physical activity

About 20% of migraine sufferers experience auras, which are visual or sensory disturbances that can occur before or between migraine attacks. Migraines are a neurological condition and are typically not related to other underlying health issues.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are rare but extremely painful. They are more common in men between the ages of 20 and 40 and have unique characteristics:

  • Severe, stabbing pain around one eye or on one side of the head

  • Short but intense attacks lasting 15 minutes to 3 hours

  • Possible occurrence up to eight times per day

  • Accompanying symptoms like tearing, nasal congestion, or forehead sweating

The extreme pain of cluster headaches often causes restlessness or agitation during an attack.
